This island a few minutes by boat from the Giens peninsula can be visited on foot or bicycle to discover its idyllic beaches, crystalline waters and sun-soaked creeks. In its best establishments you can sample its wine and fruit plus its oil, for Porquerolles is home to a collection of rare olive trees – no less than 195 varieties on 4 hectares! The olive harvest is regulated and supervised by Marie-Claude Cano who is extremely knowledgeable about heritage fruits. Her Saveur des Vergers products – olive oil, preserves, myrtle liqueur etc – can be bought where they are made at the Oustaou de Diou farm (open to the public), in village shops or from the very chic 4-star Mas du Langoustier hotel. As well as from Hyères, further crossings are scheduled from La Seyne-sur-Mer to Porquerolles and Port-Cros.
