“We even jazzed up the carols on Christmas Eve!”
Lulled from birth by the swing records by top musicians that their father listened to, brothers Julien and Thomas de Bie, otherwise known as Parallells, figured from an early age that music would monopolise their lives. The Dutch-born duo inherited their parents’ sunny disposition, acceptance of others and unconditional love of music and creativity. “At home there was jazz from morning to night, without exception,” says Thomas. “On Christmas Eve we even jazzed up the carols!” quips Julien with a smile. Having attended a conservatoire of music from the age of six, both are very complete musicians and composers, as skilled at the mixing desk as playing piano or guitar. “Our father passed his passion on to us, so every one of our compositions incorporates jazz sounds.” After studying in the Netherlands, where they connected with the best in electronica, they began performing in Monaco and on the Côte d’Azur before heading out to conquer the international scene. Now constantly on the road or between planes, they perform worldwide at such headline events as Moga Festival, AfrikaBurn and Burning Man. Their personalities are different but their vision and philosophy of life are identical and they compose as one. They love experimenting and have fun making music out of sounds they record during their travels – in a Moroccan market, animals on an African reserve –, which they then turn into videos titled A Day At... The hyperactive pair have also started the Klassified Music label and a music festival focused on electro sounds and spiritual arts. Over the years they have earned an unassailable reputation, notably playing Berlin’s Wilde Renate club, the Ahau in Tulum and The Cuckoo Club in London. Next on the cards? The release of a new compilation, The Feathers’ Eyes, another A Day At... planned for April 2020 and their first tour of Asia with performances in Hong Kong, Bali, Bangkok and the Wonderfruit festival.
