Who says engineers use the left, analytical side of their brain more than the right, artistically sensitive hemisphere? Not Dominique Jaussein! In his day job he's a loss assessor specialising in serious fire damage, but he recently opened a gallery in Nice devoted to contemporary art photography. Which means signed, certified prints in limited editions of no more than 30. Why a photo gallery? "It's been my passion for 30 years," he says. A passion he has perfected over the years with many a training course – especially at Studio Harcourt, famous for its portraits of stars – and has practiced professionally for the Opéra de Nice and Ballet de Nice. Now the globe-trotting art photographer has moved into new territory with a highly original concept at his Darkroom gallery. Entering the gallery is like stepping into a camera obscura, that optical device that projects an image onto a flat surface through a pinhole. The photos on display are lit up in succession, for twenty seconds each, "so one can literally immerse oneself in the image and absorb it fully without being distracted by the neighbouring pictures."
