You come across her sometimes on her bike in Nice—her adopted land—or in her studio on rue Bonaparte among the characters she paints. From the outset, the composition of Svetà Marlier’s paintings has been a throwback to history’s great paintings. A graduate of the Fine Arts Academy in Moscow and cartoon specialist, as she grew up, she was counselled by her grandfather- photographer and her Ukrainian-born uncle, the painter Yuri Tchary. “I started copying famous artists and painting portraits on commission when I moved to Nice,” remembers Svetà Marlier. Installed in the large shop windows skirting the Acropolis, Svetà Marlier’s work challenges with her black and white portraits in black stone and varnished layers of fine acrylic resin. As well as taking part in an open-air exhibition in the city for the Nice Jazz Festival this summer, she is unveiling her latest figurative pieces in her Nice studio until end-September. Are we descendants of Adam and Eve, Leda and the Swan, or something else? Svetà Marlier likes to question origins. And it is to the sources of femininity and womanliness, free-spirited and assertive, that she will soon be returning in her solo autumn show on the theme of Witches at the Artothèque of Draguignan.
