Born in Kanazawa, she grew up in a temple house amongst believers surrounded by mountains. “I think a lot about yōkai, such supernatural beings. Creatures springing from human imagination that live in the wild; sometimes malicious, sometimes good-hearted. Strange and ambiguous beasts,” says Makiko Furuichi, who, after studying in her hometown, finished her course at the Beaux-Arts de Nantes in 2011.
Recently presented at the Dojo in Nice in a group exhibition about drawing entitled Intime du Vide, she brought an entire room of the Chagall Museum to life with watercolours for the institution’s 50th anniversary. “When I had my exhibition at the Frac des Pays de la Loire, I started to paint directly on the wall and enjoyed getting out of the frame. I then worked on a hotel room, a stage curtain, and at the Ackerman Cellar in Saumur.” And what a meeting between the biblical universe dear to Marc Chagall and the creatures at the confluence of this visual artist’s myths. With her thin transparent layers and pigmented water flows, Makiko Furuichi pays an intense tribute to the great colourist that
the artist also was.
“I erased the mistakes at first when I started painting,” she adds, “but then I realised that this first trace could help draw a second line. In the fresco that Makiko Furuichi created here in just five days, opposite the large mosaic dedicated to the prophet Elijah, she brings out the green of the vegetation, the blue of rain, and the red of flames.
