"When I saw Disney-nature's Wings of Life documentary I was struck by our food chain's dependence on the bees, butterflies, hummingbirds etc. that are dying out," Kate Powers explains. So the American owner and cofounder of the Stars’N’Bars, opposite Monaco's Port Hercule, had the idea of installing 60-plus metres of recycled-wood planters in order to grow vegetables and herbs. Now her customers seated on Quai Antoine Ier see thyme, chives, basil, peppers, tomatoes, lettuces and strawberries growing before their eyes! "This kitchen garden is our contribution to helping save the planet, and our neighbours are delighted with our little corner of nature," Kate enthuses. Of course, it isn't possible to grow everything this celebrity sports museum needs for its international cuisine, but here and there on the menu you'll find its home-grown produce: peppers adding colour to salads, courgettes turned into spaghetti, parsley garnishing the plates, mint flavouring the mojitos. This new initiative builds on Kate and her team's involvement each year in Monacology Week, which aims to educate Monegasque schoolchildren and families in protecting the environment.
