Igor Makarevich tells us he settled on the Côte d’Azur "by chance" but points out that it wasn't "by chance" he left Moscow. "I needed to change my life and make more time for my family and my career as an artist." A career that began on the side-lines since his work in Russia as an artistic director, first for a magazine then for a big national TV company designing its sets, left him little time for leisure. Yet he developed and patented a brand new image-application technique for his artworks, a process that mixes photography, metal-infused pigments, printing and manual work to create paintings that change with the light and angle of view, their vibrancy a fascinating reminder of pop art. His graphic world is colourful and alive, almost chameleonic; his oeuvre one that demands to be seen but also, increasingly, to be sensed. Yigo, as he signs his work, often abandons the purely figurative and photographed subjects to explore a more personal path; a space in which he expresses himself more freely by giving complete latitude to his imagination and where form opens a level of consciousness that sweeps one far beyond what it depicts.
