No way could you have zapped this year's Nice Carnival float spawned from the retro-fantasy artwork of Loïc Malnati: the artist's personal take on the media (the 2016 theme) took the form of a giant "puppet" peering out through camera eyes! Malnati, who works mainly in black and white, has embraced the steampunk movement inspired in part by 19th-century industrial machinery and which has influenced the feel of Tim Burton films and the aesthetics of street-theatre company Royal de Luxe. His engaging maverick figures – men, women, children, old people, musicians, artists, ecologists... – have brought him fame.Having started out authoring successful comic books (25 published to date) then worked in cinema as a storyboard artist and designer, Malnati has now opened his own tattoo parlour so he can ink his original drawings onto his fans' bodies! Again he has hit the jackpot, with body-art aficionados coming from all over the world to profit from his remarkable skill in ornamenting skin with freehand-drawn custom tattoos that respect each individual's physiognomy.
