Winter in Courchevel, summer in the Riviera's finest hotels – this 46-year-old professional saxophonist plays at the hippest social functions. A brilliant soloist, he has been travelling France with his saxes (alto, tenor and soprano) since 1987. "I was born into a family of musicians and trained in classical music at the Lyon conservatoire, then swapped the piano for my grandfather's sax. I was 15 when I realised I could make a career out of music, so the day I started in the sixth form, I told my father I was quitting school to devote myself to music. I worked at it 10 hours a day for months, and by the time I was 17 I was earning my living from my passion!" Today Alain Tourniaire shares his love of music through intimate performances at glamorous functions. His secret for creating an ambience? "Accustom the ear to easy melodies, then when I have the audience's attention I move onto less mainstream music, such as smooth jazz." And this connoisseur of sweet notes wanders from table to table entrancing his listeners individually – talk about atmosphere!
