In the world of prestige auctions, 59-year-old auctioneer Jean-Pierre Besch is a man to watch. For over 25 years Cannes has been home to his Besch Cannes Auction house now specialised in niche markets such as 20th-century art (Impressionism to contemporary) and great wines (for which it ranks ninth worldwide). Both are personal favourites of this Burgundian antique-dealer's son with a veritable passion for beautiful things. “What gets my adrenalin flowing? The thrill of the bidding and the adjudication, but above all else discovering an object and its history.” At a desk occupied by art books and extraordinary items awaiting buyers a drawing co-signed Picasso and Cocteau on Villa Santo Sospir notepaper, a vase signed Emile Gallé... –, Besch is preparing the catalogue for his next Christmas sale, in the Hôtel Martinez's reception rooms from 28 to 31 December “Over the years this has become quite a tradition for art collectors and wine connoisseurs. The exceptional wines this year include a lot of three bottles of 1935 Romanée-Conti with a reserve price of €20,000.”
