"When I joined the Yacht Club in 1976 it had only four employees – today we're an entire family!" With characteristic humility the Yacht Club de Monaco's manager and general secretary looks back over his four decades with the Monegasque institution, a "small career", as he likes to put it, that he owes to "life's accidents and meetings". With Prince Rainier to start with, then with Prince Albert II when he became club president in 1984. Equally at home on a sail boat as behind his desk, d’Alessandri is not a man people forget. A seaman at heart and an accomplished sailor – captain of Biotonus-YCM in the 1985 Monaco-New York transatlantic race, helmsman of Tuiga, the Yacht Club's flagship –, this child of the Nice back country discovered rather by chance his enduring passion for the sea: "I must have been 10 when I went on a sail boat for the first time, and barely 10m from the shore I felt I'd discovered a whole new world! As if everything that happened on land stayed on land...." A revelation that has stayed with him ever since. And when asked about his years to come, he quotes Oscar Wilde: "'There are only two tragedies in life: one is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it.' I wanted to make this club something good. I think we've succeeded. Now we have to pass that on!"
