"I'll circumnavigate the world alone under the three capes, I'll sail through storms without knowing if I'll survive, I'll round Cape Horn!" Yvan Griboval has made the childhood dream he nursed since reading Bernard Moitessier's The Long Way in 1972 come true: the sailor/explorer/journalist cast off from Monaco last 17 November on a solitary 152-day voyage that saw him round three famous capes: Good Hope (South Africa), Leeuwin (Australia) and Horn (Chile). His mission? To complete the first ever oceanographic data collection campaign at the air-sea interface in the South Seas in order to further knowledge about the causes and consequences of climate change. "This virtually unexplored area is hugely important as the Antarctic Circumpolar Current feeds all the planet's currents." Equipped with sensors to measure the salinity and temperature of the surface water, the OceanoScientific Explorer Boogaloo, a 16-metre monohull sailboat, covered 65,246 kilometres under its own power, without emitting any CO2 or leaving any waste. The data and samples collected under the 40th southern parallel will now be analysed by scientists to help us understand climate change. Meanwhile Griboval is already preparing his next expedition, and doing battle on land: "I have the firm intention of fighting until my dying day for the region of the sea between the 40th and 60th southern parallels to be sanctuarised forever."
