Eyes closed I rediscover Unbreak My Heart by Toni Braxton – the American singer's voice inhabits the room... until Didier Kwak twiddles the controls of his Askja Origin and the acoustic demonstration comes to an end. Mind-blowing. In the living room of his Nice villa, this visual effects expert – notably responsible for the conception of those in Luc Besson's Fifth Element – introduces us to his amazing invention, an innovative, psycho-acoustically designed audio system comprised of six components:player/amplifier, power supply, two filters, two 1.4m speakers. Wanting to recreate emotions comparable to those of live performances, in 2001 he began building his own audio system, which he named after the Icelandic volcano Askja, where he had perceived "the most beautiful silence". In collaboration with Swiss Fibertec – a firm specialised in making carbon components for use in motorsports – he perfected a system unprecedented in its design, based on aerodynamics and fluid mechanics. The result? A veritable acoustic masterpiece! Emotions guaranteed.
