Hierro obeys his passion, not giving a damn for discourses on art and the new. The Casablanca-born artist who came to Nice as a teenager was seized early on by a need to paint and had his first exhibition at 17, launching a career that has taken him from Paris to Basel, Vienna, San Francisco and further. An adventurer at heart, he derives his heritage from classical painting but enriches it with contemporary practices, challenging the contradictions of our societies. His most recent series draws us into the vibrant world of cities, dark and disturbing but mostly luminous and joyful.
Urban Garden
has grown to fruition in residence at La Menuiserie in Nice and will pursue its path this summer at the 345 Gallery in New York, after which both parts will be shown together in Nice in 2019. Inspired by the energy of street art, the artist develops a calligraphy all his own so as to bring a rush of hope in art shaking off its turpitudes. Hierro absorbs the energy of cities the world over, adopting all the art forms as background. Through flowers and words, their colour and their poetry, he liberates the unmistakeably positive energies of London, Singapore and Miami, delivering a universal message.
