At La Menuiserie in Nice he cultivated a luxuriant Urban Garden for us, an exhibition challenging how we relate to our environment. It travels this year to New York, and the artist’s work is on permanent exhibition in Miami and Singapore. For us, Hierro has created the trophies awarded to the winners of this year’s COTE Invent’ competition: totem-like sculptures, scorched-branch trees conjured out of two acrylic glass cut-outs, emphasising the artist’s touch, as matt black as carbon, like the pieces he presented recently in the “Black Gold” exhibition at the Riviera Gallery. “I deliberately chose a simple shape for these sculptures because I wanted to say that often when you have an innovative idea, it seems so simple, so obvious, that you wonder why it hasn’t been thought of before,” the artist explains. He believes our human intelligence must today devote all its creativity to serving the environment, that innovation has one imperative, one urgency: to find solutions for the future of our planet, and therefore for ourselves.
