CitizenFarm has teamed up with Potager en Ville to develop a tasty, organic, eco-friendly concept: aquaponic urban farming
Combine aquaculture with hydroponics and you get... aquaponics, or growing plants in water and farming aquatic animals in a symbiotic environment. In real terms this means cultivating herbs, fruit and vegetables in glass tanks (no soil) in which you also raise fish to eat. The waste from the fish supplies organic food for the plants and the plants filter the water. A self-sufficient ecosystem, sustainable and entirely natural. CitizenFarm, started by Pierre Osswald in 2014, is a French aquaponics pioneer out to inform about this practice still unfamiliar to the general public and in the longer term set up aquaponic farms all over. And what better growing conditions for this idea than our Côte d’Azur with its wholesome lifestyle and healthy gastronomy? As a logical result, CitizenFarm has joined forces with the Nice association Potager en Ville, presided by Lina Cappellini, which helps people find allotments near their homes and is keen to develop aquaponics in the PACA region. Combining hands-on local experience with mastery of a system first used in the 13th century, the partners will develop their knowhow with the aim of taking aquaponics to a new level. Introductory workshops are already scheduled in Nice, along with the opening of an urban farm.
