Jean Le Gac, a key artist of the New Figuration movement, uses photos, drawings, paintings and text in his work. A poetic, imaginary world infuses his large-scale installations, evoking themes that are dear to him: ancient and modern art, literature, explorers and mythologies.

Some forty 19th- and 20th-century canvases illustrate the high standards set by the Regards de Provence foundation, which became a museum in 2013. It is now an essential feature of Marseille’s cultural landscape, showing how academic painters, Post-Impressionists, Fauvists, Expressionists and great contemporary painters have celebrated Marseille, the coast and the Provençal countryside down the years. A heartfelt ode to the light of the South.
