Ready for a trip down under in the company of the people whose sagacity Claude Levi-Strauss praised in The Savage Mind? Although the first instances of Australia’s Aboriginal art date back more than 30,000 years, it was only in 1971 that a first collective artwork led to the Papunya Tula Art Movement being born. This led to an extensive rehabilitation of the traditional Aboriginal iconography that depicted dreamtime creation stories in caves and at waterholes, and to a profound renewal of those art practices. Abandoning traditional pigments in favour of acrylic paints, the artists set about reproducing on canvas the ancestral ceremonial imagery previously restricted to initiates only. Their work spread through numerous artists’ cooperatives, at last achieving the international recognition it deserved.
