Quatuor Modigliani

  • Together is better

In 2003 four friends studying at the national conservatoire in Paris became the Quatuor Modigliani, then went on to start Saint-Paul-de-Vence's music festival, returning to the Riviera every summer to reinvent it. Driven by their shared passion for stringed instruments, Amaury Coeytaux, Loic Rio, Laurent Marfaing and François Kieffer rapidly made a name for themselves as one of the most in-demand string quartets on the planet, now regular guests of top international series and prestigious venues such as New York's Carnegie Hall. It was a much more intimate atmosphere, however, that charmed the four virtuosi back in 2011. "We really fell in love with Saint-Paul-de-Vence. I'll never forget the first concert we played there, in the collegiate church. It was so intense," Loic Rio confides. Determined to repeat the experience, the quartet started a unique music festival hallmarked by magical venues such as the village's Place de la Courtine, the Miró Labyrinth at Fondation Maeght and of course that collegiate church. For their ninth festival they have concocted a programme featuring such big names as Gidon Kremer in the classical repertoire and Victor Julien-Laferrière of the new generation. They make room too for other types of music, this year personified by the renowned Korean contemporary jazz musician Youn Sun Nah, playing on
24 July.
