The Château Saint-Martin & Spa is exhibiting the work of two multidimensional artists, Valencian sculptor Manolo Valdés and surrealist Erick Ifergan.
From the Metropolitan in New York to the Pompidou Centre in Paris, Spanish artist Manolo Valdés’s work can be seen in leading museums worldwide. His huge bronze sculptures also turn up in more unexpected places – Place Vendôme in Paris, the Château de Chambord, and most recently the Château Saint-Martin & Spa in Vence. Until 13 October the hotel grounds host four of his sculptures to striking effect, as if guarding the place in their immobility. La Mariposa of blue butterflies accompanies Reina Mariana and Dama a Caballo figures, contemporary in their stylisation but recognisable by their yesteryear finery as inspired by famous Velazquez paintings. For Valdés believes in creating by reinterpreting – subverting even – iconic images from art history.
Surrealist artist Erick Ifergan chose to lead the hotel’s guests and visitors through the Château Saint-Martin’s gallery and chapel in “a visual and spiritual emotional experience”. An accomplished mixed-media artist as well as a photographer and filmmaker, Ifergan draws us into his world through drawings, paintings, sculptures and ceramics, making the invisible visible. His are powerful, colourful works in which an instinctive hand can be likened to abstract calligraphy, lines that give birth on the chapel’s walls to a Tree of Life embracing heaven and earth. Art that lifts the soul....
