The Gala Russe is back in Monaco in September with a single performance of Anna Karenina.
Faithful to the spirit of Serge Diaghilev's great ballets, this annual gala invites audiences to (re)discover the Russian passion for the art of dance through performances of classical and contemporary works. On 13 September the Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg is guesting at the Salle des Princes, Grimaldi Forum Monaco, with a new show. The ballet Anna Karenina, created in 2005 with music by Tchaikovsky, faithfully reflects the "Russian" spirit of Tolstoy's literary masterpiece published in 1877. Choreographer Boris Eifman has conscientiously translated into dance the quintessence of the tale – the love triangle between Anna, Karenin and Vronsky – while leaving the subplots aside.

"Anna preferred her devouring love for Vronsky to her maternal duty and so was condemned to live on the fringes of society. To me, this character is a kind of chameleon, revealing two personalities. On the surface she's a high society lady, wife of Karenin and mother to a child, respected by all. But inside she is faced with a world of passion," explains Eifman. "Tolstoy's novel plunges you into the main character's psychological world and the psycho-erotic interpretation of her personality. All of this formed the basis and essence of my choreographic reflections." This astonishing choreographer, who has headed the St. Petersburg theatre since 1977, has used the language of the body to describe the tragedy of a woman reborn through passion and ready for any sacrifice. He has succeeded wonderfully.
