L'Espace de l’Art Concret is celebrating the 10th birthday of its "manifesto" building via 18 artists who have marked the place and/or the art movement.
Despite its venerable age, Mouans-Sartoux's château is still young at heart! The contemporary-art centre devoted to Concrete Art, set up in 1990 at the instigation of Swiss collectors Sybil Albers and Gottfried Honegger, pursues its artistic and cultural mission of educating our eyes – particularly youngsters' – while promoting the outstanding collection donated to France in the 2000s and housed in new premises in 2004. It is therefore this "manifesto" building being feted this year, a superb piece of eye-catching yellowy-green architecture designed by Gigon & Guyer, whose dense, abstract, minimalist form sits harmoniously with the surrounding trees.
Conceived and formed by the mind
To mark this 10th anniversary, a new hanging refreshes our reading of the Albers-Honegger collection that explores from all angles the concept of Concrete Art first advocated by Dutch artist Theo Van Doesburg, who in 1930, inspired by Mondrian's ideas, proposed an art that was "entirely conceived and formed by the mind prior to its execution". The Ten Years! exhibition spotlights 18 important artists "who have notably marked the history of the place or of Concrete Art or whose role in the collection is significant," explains director and curator Fabienne Fulchéri. Gotffried Honegger naturally features, along with the movement's star, Aurelie Nemours, plus Max Bill, Marcelle Cahn, François Morellet showing a superb Sphère-trame (1970), Adrian Schiess and Bernar Venet. Until 26 October the château galleries opposite house the exhibition A corps perdu exploring the role of the human body in 20th-century art through works by Marina Abramovic, Roni Horn, Roman Opalka, Thomas Vinson and others.
