There are two very good reasons to visit the Biot museum this summer (and until 6 October): an exhibition by the great Swiss artist John Armleder and a temporary hanging of a masterpiece by the museum’s artist, on loan from the Fondation Maeght. Towards the end of his life, in the 50s, Fernand Léger produced The Country Outing, a last series of paintings depicting the leisure pursuits and paid holidays that the French took full advantage of after the war. Accompanying the final version (1954), loaned by the Maeght, are paintings and studies illustrating the various stages in his work. Evident throughout is a joyful atmosphere and a happiness at being alive, exuded by each composition. Less accessible but just as significant, the oeuvre of John Armleder (born Geneva 1948; active since the 60s) is integral to the history of art whose relationship with reality he has always questioned.
