Jean-Claude Mézières, Paris sera toujours Paris, 1999. Encre sur papier.
An invigorating exhibition devised by the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco: an event dedicated to comic strips. A medium long-considered “pop art”. More often than not choosing marginality over conventions, humour over academism. But how did it finally win the acclaim that warrants taking over museum space? Therein lies the challenge of this exhibition bringing together the work of more than 90 of the 9th Art’s biggest names. Even taking us back to Marginalia — widely regarded as the origin of comic books. The small, amusing, and often profane marginal illustrations explaining or criticising texts in Middle Age manuscripts.
