Ambitious new exhibition spaces

The return of cultural events is marked this season by the arrival of two of the big names in the art world on the Riviera, with the inauguration of two fine exhibition spaces in Monaco and Saint-Paul de Vence.

Hauser & Wirth Gallery, Monaco

“In the past, Monaco represented a true destination for artists, authors and film directors as fascinated by the Riviera as we are to this day”, explains Iwan Wirth, who founded his gallery with his wife Manuela in Switzerland in 1992. Having focused on expanding internationally in major urban centres like London, New York and Los Angeles, and popular holiday destinations, the couple is inaugurating a new gallery in the Principality on 19 June. A 290m2 exhibition space in the exclusive One Monte-Carlo district. Showcasing artists who are currently very popular or have already played a role in art history like Zeng Fanzhi, Cindy Sherman, and Jenny Holzer. The gallery opens its doors a stone’s throw from the Hôtel de Paris with an exhibition devoted to emotional relationships through the eyes of Louise Bourgeois by dint of drawings and sometimes monumental sculpture.

Fondation CAB, Saint-Paul de Vence

Behind this foundation created in 2012, which is settling at the foot of the climb leading to the Maeght Foundation, formerly the Pieters Gallery, is Belgian art collector Hubert Bonnet. This fan of minimal and conceptual art has amassed works by key 70s artists such as Donald Judd, Ground Lewitt, and Dan Flavin. As of 25 June, you will be able to discover pieces from this collection—it also includes rising artists like John McCracken, young talents such as Ariane Loze, and furniture by the great designers of the post-war period. With the particularity of a restaurant and four guest rooms, the place aims to become a major cultural player in the South of France.
