Genèse de l’Empire céleste

The sky was very early on an inexhaustible source of beliefs, interpretations, and myths. Cosmology, then astronomy, became state sciences in China. And the Empire’s rulers were considered the sons of heaven, guarantors of the link with the earth. The ornamental mineral jade served as a link in this marriage between light and darkness, referring to the universe’s origin. Jade is also the base material too used in many of the objects in this exhibition. Further enriched by works in agate, turquoise, and liturgical silk fabrics embellished with gold thread. Nearly 200 pieces from the Sam and Myrna Myers collection brought together, offering a journey between emblematic symbols, mythical bestiary, and ritual instruments.
