To the darkest of the finest deserted garden
Born into a family of Dutch settlers, Christine Boumeester moved to the South of France with her husband Henri Goetz during the Second World War to escape the Gestapo. Here she developed a special relationship with Francis Picabia and became his muse. A graduate of the Hague School of Fine Arts and close to the Belgian Surrealists, she eventually chose abstraction, encouraged by Hartung. Just as an artist would work at night to bring out the light, so that colour emerges from black and white, Boumeester has this secret of forms born from darkness along the way.
