So enchanting is the musical structure of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s compositions we will never celebrate him enough. What’s more, the poet Verlaine wrote: Mozart is an inexhaustible source of youth. The orchestra has chosen to pay homage to him each year with a series of concerts on the Austrian composer’s birthday—he was born on 27 January 1756. This seasonal event begins with a Happy Hour concert (25 January) as a prelude to two symphonic concerts with German pianist Martin Helmchen (27 and 30 January). Highlights, knowing that the latter’s first album released in 2007 was devoted to Mozart’s piano concertos. Then follows a chamber music programme (4 February) and a final symphonic concert with mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli (6 February). Not forgetting a “Jeune Public” concert on the theme of Mozart’s Childhood (2 February)—the prodigy began composing at the age of six. A many-faceted and ambitious programme for all audiences. Happy birthday Mozart! Note that apart from this series the orchestra will be welcoming the immense pianist Martha Argerich (9 January). And other concerts taking place at the beginning of the year include conductor Cristian Măcelaru and violinist Valeriy Sokolov (16 January), Russian pianist Mikhail Pletnev for a Chopin recital (20 January), and baritone Matthias Goerne in a Russian programme conducted by young conductor Stanislav Kochanovsky (22 January).
