He enjoyed capturing everyday scenes in his homeland (Deauville, Cannes, Nice…) as much as letting his feelings guide him on his many travels, in the Maghreb and Black Africa notably, but James Rassiat (1909-1998) never compromised on the subject of his freedom, a question of principle. Menton’s Musée des Beaux-Arts is showing his work until 20 October. “Surprisingly, far from leading him astray, such spontaneity enabled him to perfect his art,“ the exhibition’s curator explains. “Despite his attachment to figurative portrayal, his art is also a pictorial form of writing. Rassiat may not have revolutionised painting but he takes us on a journey through the painting of his era, which he knew and kept a close eye on but without ever succumbing or being subject to it.“
