Marthe was Pierre Bonnard’s muse, sole model, wife and dream, her harmonious body inspiring his painting. Throughout his life (1867-1947) he loved and portrayed her. The Annonciade Museum’s exhibition displays essentially drawings from a private collection, most never previously shown to the public, but also paintings of Marthe naked: Nude in Profile (1917), Nude in Front of the Fireplace (1919), Nude at her Toilet, from Behind (1934)… Lastly come six photos from the score known to exist; in the bucolic setting of the Montval garden, we see Bonnard and Marthe in turn, naked.
