This major representative (born 1948) of Portugal's artistic revival is showing his work in France for the first time – in Nice! Until 30 November the MAMAC has a spectacular retrospective on an artist whose work has been hailed by museums and galleries the world over. Meaning you can't afford to miss this overview of his poetic, conceptual world, showing how his art has evolved, aesthetically and iconographically, through a "protean oeuvre" featuring a headless woman in a black dress. By playing on associations, Sarmento challenges the viewer, who is thus led to confront their most inadmissible vices, as in eroticism, the unsaid, frustrations, fantasies. A compelling experience that again underlines the MAMAC's fundamental role in national and international contemporary art.
