Calder (1898-1976) set art in movement and made it mobile by conceiving metal sculptures that play with nature’s harmonies or create abstract surrealistic shapes. To mark the Maeght Foundation’s 50th anniversary, the MAMAC evokes the connection between the Maeght family and the American sculptor and painter. One of Calder’s major sculptures, Stabile-Mobile (1970), has stood on the museum’s forecourt for over 20 years; now inside you can see an exhibition of around 50 of his works: wire sculptures, bronzes, mobiles, drawings but also prints, documentaries and publications. In Aimé Maeght the artist found a choice supporter, a story well worth revisiting through his oeuvre.
