Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s strong point – in addition to being an immensely gifted choreographer – is that he confronts, personally and artistically, all disciplines and cultures without making any value judgements. Which doubtless explains the forcefulness of his shows appreciated by all kinds of audiences and numerous artists keen to work with him, because as well as his avid appetite for creation, the Belgian-Moroccan choreographer also knows how to share his stage with dancers and musicians of every persuasion. Such is the case with Play, his collaboration with Shantala Shivalingappa, the leading Indian kuchipudi dancer and protégée of the late lamented Pina Bausch; they perform together to a riot of traditional Indian melodies and modern music played by four live musicians.
