This artist's work is shown regularly all over the world but strangely enough remains little known in France. Toulon's Hôtel des Arts gave him its keys and a free hand, since the Portuguese artist (born 1956) is accustomed to taking over an entire venue by bringing in objects literally and deliberately composed to "profoundly destabilise the space and how it is perceived", so as to incite reflection and contemplation. For this subjective take, which may on occasion leave the visitor sceptical, Cabrita-Reis worked with local window manufacturer Fenêtre Baudisson in creating new pieces to confront old sculptures made from building materials (wood, paint, aluminium, neons, cables, tar, electrical wire etc.).
