Natacha Lesueur

  • Female figures.

 N. Lesueur 5793

The Cannes-born photographer pursues her investigations into the question of identity at the Galerie de la Marine and Eva Vautier's gallery, where it's a pleasure to rediscover her sophisticated, moving, amusing stagings. On Quai des Etats-Unis, the photos and ceramics of Exotic Tragédie reinterpret the iconic figure of Carmen Miranda, the sultry 40s-50s actress and singer whom Hollywood loved and left. Lesueur reveals – and makes us think about – the fantasies, attractions and repulsions that the body invokes, seizing on the Brazilian Bombshell's caricatural exoticism and
stigmatising the artificiality of her character (excessive makeup, garishly colourful costumes, kitsch accessories etc.) to better express her profound underlying sadness. At Eva Vautier's gallery, Cailles Blanches, Grisettes et Aigrettes Noires deliberately mirrors the Marine exhibition less colourfully and more intimately, winning our unreserved approval. Lesueur has mixed old works (including two very fine photos from her emblematic Pressions) with her latest series, Carine, that once again explores "the gendered appearance" of the female figure.
