Tribute to Charlotte Salomon. David Foenkinos's book Charlotte has rekindled interest in the work and tragic fate of painter Charlotte Salomon, who was deported and died in Auschwitz in 1943 at the age of 26. Salomon produced almost her entire oeuvre, some 1300-plus gouaches, in Villefranche-sur-Mer, her refuge for a time. This May the town installed a commemorative plaque in Rue de l'Ermitage and inaugurated a tribute exhibition in the
Citadelle to this forgotten artist's life and work.
