Although an integral part of the town that has housed it for 60 years, the Annonciade tells us nothing of Saint-Tropez's history, as Jean-Paul Monery, the museum's curator since 1991, observes: "Its originality lies in illustrating the role the town played in avant-garde pictorial research during the late-19th and early-20th centuries." Starting with the arrival one day in 1892 of Paul Signac, who fell in love with the little fishing port bathed in light. Following him, other important painters (Matisse, Bonnard, Manguin, Marquet etc.) recharged their batteries here in their individual ways. The first exhibition in homage to the museum's donors presented the collection as it was on 10 July 1955, the inauguration day of the "loveliest little museum in France". The second hanging, "more museal and contemporary", sets out to order the various art movements making up the collection. Alongside, the Annonciade is displaying photos and texts showing that 1955 was also the year Brigitte Bardot first came to Saint-Tropez! Throughout the summer the museum is screening films from that era in an open-air auditorium in its gardens.
