The gallery devotes its fifth big summer exhibition to artists whose radical new approaches marked their eras, from 20th-century masters through to today’s avant-garde practitioners.
Every summer the Monaco Opera Gallery uses its walls to display a vast themed exhibition in aid of the Mission Enfance charity that works world-
wide for children’s schooling. Summer 2013’s Highlights marked the 40th anniversary of Picasso’s death, 2014’s Icons of Art focused on such emblematic American artists as Andy Warhol and Alexander Calder, and now this year the gallery presents Tempo, an intergenerational overview of artists who helped transform the cultural landscape of their day. This panorama naturally includes the three key artists mentioned above, along with ballerinas sketched in black ink by Matisse, a red gouache-and-pastel circus by Chagall, a generously proportioned accordion player by Botero, and works by abstract Expressionists Soulages, Zao Wou-Ki and Lanskoy.
Italian monochromes
The hanging also places the avant-garde creations of Spaniard Manolo Valdès and Japanese Yayoi Kusama alongside those of talented contemporary Korean artists Bahk Seon-Ghi and Lee Jae-Hyo. ‘‘Great artists are much in demand in the Principality, but we also do a gallerist’s work of drawing collectors’ attention to Italian artists such as Marcello Lo Giudice, Alessandro Algardi and Umberto Mariani, perpetuators of the Zero movement initiated by Lucio Fontana in 1947,’’ explains Didier Viltart, the gallery’s director for the last seven years after previously opening the New Bond Street gallery in London. These artworks hunted out in Italy can then go on show in the Opera Gallery group’s 12 other galleries around the world, in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. This present exhibition, under the patronage of Prince Albert II is on until 31 August.
