Perfume is one of the endless ways we express our personality, and so is ornamenting our skin, that essential interface between ourselves and others. We can temporarily make up or paint this live canvas or permanently tattoo and pierce it, but the intention is always to communicate something, be that aesthetic, social, political or religious. Thanks to loans from Basel’s Museum of Cultures, this exhibition takes us off to distant islands and continents – Indonesia, Oceania, Africa –, exploring secular rites but also posing questions relevant to an era when body image is a topical issue. The Grasse museum has also seized the opportunity to display its extensive collection of Yemeni items plus those to do with western cosmetics, which it rarely shows.
