Their music blends cultures and influences to produce a colourful sound that’s modern but ageless. Two concerts you shouldn’t miss.
These young singers embody a refreshing, sensuous new music scene but their roots nonetheless draw deeply on blues, folk etc. As a little girl Jain* travelled the world with her father; in the Congo she learnt to compose music and her life took a new direction. Now, alone with her machines, she writes funky, dancey electronic tracks with catchy refrains, like new standards for the future. Her first album is titled Zanaka, which means “child” in Malagasy – a nod to her mother’s origins. Jain expresses her involvement in today’s world through lyrics that deal lucidly with social issues.
Imany**, who campaigns against endometriosis, has a powerful husky voice that calls to mind Tracy Chapman or Nina Simone. She grew up in Paris, in a family originally from the Comoros, and initially worked in New York as a model, but her lifelong passion for music won out. Back in France, she released her album The Shape of a Broken Heart in 2011 and it quickly went platinum. Her voice, style and a very natural stage presence mark her out from other singers.
