Opéra de Monte-Carlo

  • Attila

 OperaMC Attila DSC 9799 1
 Attila de Giuseppe Verdi.

Verdi’s Attila was often performed before Italian unification in 1870 since its jibes at the Austrian occupier appealed to audiences’ patriotism, but later it lost out to the masterpieces of the composer’s maturity. Now the opera harking back to Rome’s ancient history is being performed in Monaco’s opulent Salle Garnier for the first time. Attila is a concise, flamboyant work, vocally extremely demanding with its cabalette arias derived from Italian bel canto. Featuring a leading character of unprecedented complexity, a decidedly modern proto-feminist heroine and spectacular stage bands, it makes for a wonderful show borne by the composer’s genius.
