Fernand Léger, the famous “realist“ painter tuned in to the elements of modern life, also embraced certain precepts advocated by the Surrealists, whom he appreciated and frequented while in exile in the USA during the Second World War. The exhibition Reconstruire le réel (Reconstructing the Real) demonstrates this through some of the artist’s works featuring unusual assemblages of weightless objects – reminding us of the Surrealists’ concept of “objective chance“ – or shapes seemingly derived from the organic world.
