Through his actions and his painting, Ben Vautier, known as Ben, has made an art out of life. His writings have made him hugely popular and his artworks can be admired from the MAMAC in Nice to the MoMA in New York. The artist now has a load of surprises up his sleeve – exhibitions, talks etc. – at the Vautier gallery, which had the excellent idea of giving him carte blanche until summer. Ben throws nothing away so over the course of his life has accumulated a vast quantity of miscellaneous objects! Always deeply involved in the contemporary art scene, he has consistently supported creativity, from César, Arman and Martial Raysse who became part of the Ecole de Nice movement to Robert Combas, Hervé Di Rosa and their colleagues to whom he gave the name Figuration Libre; in earlier days he also frequented Yves Klein and the Nouveaux Réalistes. Ben believes art must always be new and create a shock.
