Nouveau Musée National de Monaco

Duane Hanson

For 40-plus years Duane Hanson (1925-1996) created startlingly lifelike sculptures of America’s working class and often-ignored members of society; a social-realism artist who turned everyday life into iconographic material. The Nouveau Musée National de Monaco presently has a retrospective on him at Villa Paloma, showing his most emblematic works from the 1970s to 1990s, an exhibition initially produced by the Serpentine Galleries in London. Hanson cast his pieces in his studio from live models, adding meticulous detailing – body hairs, veins, bruises etc. – then hand-picking their clothes and accessories from second-hand shops. His sculpture depicts a class and a nation, communicating deeply moving social and political realities.
