Jean Cocteau dubbed Lucien Clergue the photographer poet, who throughout his life retained his links with the Camargue, its light infusing most of his creative work. In 2011 Clergue contributed to the Menton museum’s inauguration by donating 240 photographs. Most were taken during the filming of Le Testament d’Orphée as Cocteau’s photoreporter-cum-friend, an intense human adventure that began in Les Baux-de-Provence and today forms the core of an exhibition dedicated to the man who started the Rencontres d’Arles photography festival.
