The Korean master photographer’s pictures have something of the graphic abstraction of Hans Hartung and Franz Kline about them. Through gradations of grey, manipulations of light and shade, diaphanous skies and close framings, Bae Bien-U pays tribute to the aesthetics of traditional sansuhwa landscapes painted in Chinese ink. In the exhibition he has called “The Spirit of the Place”, which includes a work produced on Ile Sainte-Marguerite, the photographer whose work can be seen in top museums explores his favourite themes: nature’s magic, sacred wood and the pine tree that symbolises the Korean soul.
