 Kim Joon , Drunken – Dom Perignon, 2011. Tirage numérique, H. 150 x l. 240 cm.

Pottery is now recognised as an art in its own right and is enjoying a boom. Focusing on the interaction between knowhow, technique and cultures, the Vallauris Biennial’s circuit of six venues, starting at Musée Magnelli, demonstrates the considerable diversity of contemporary ceramics. For this edition the town where both Picasso and Chagall worked is showing no less than 65 ceramic artists, among them the Italians Bertozzi & Casoni, the Swede Christin Johansson and Hella Jongerius’s dynamic Dutch scene at the Marcel Wanders media library. Also spotlighted is Korea in the person of mixed-media artist Kim Joon, creators Philippe Barde and Guillaume Bardet, and of course the 2016 competition winners.
