 TPI Lartigue

Jacques-Henri Lartigue, Renée, Biarritz, 1930.

A 20th-century genius of black-and-white photography, Lartigue found fame with pictures of his family life and Belle Epoque high society. The TPI spotlights his work through a superb exhibition on the theme of the passing moment, the brevity of happiness and the fragility of existence. Lartigue, who was born in Courbevoie in 1894 and died in Nice in 1986, left a testimony to his era that employed a wide diversity of photographic techniques for his pictures that capture movement. We see members of his family and his muse Renée, but also the first steps in aviation, sports events, the Bois de Boulogne ‘‘fine ladies’’ and the Riviera where he stayed many times between 1908 and 1986.
