The exhibition borrows its title from Fernando Pessoa’s Book of Disquiet since the pieces by the 14 female artists showing, mainly from countries bordering the Mediterranean, pose similar questions about territory, frontiers, cultures and aesthetics, along with others about how the feminine is perceived today and was in the past. The Hôtel des Arts also commissioned three other artists specially, one being Aïcha Hamu from Nice, who also contributed to the exhibition design. Seeking constantly to shift the visitor’s gaze by a forced positioning in the space, the Villa Arson-trained artist has laid a strange red carpet up the museum’s main staircase, creating “a circulatory web from which the exit can only be envisaged mentally”.
