On the Baroque music scene exchanges were frequent; when a musician borrowed a melody from a contemporary or predecessor they did not see it as plagiary but as paying tribute to the original or simply using a material considered to be freely available. The 2016-17 season of the Ensemble Baroque de Nice directed by Gilbert Bezzina explores that European music scene, teasing out connections between composers and noting the influences exercised on them. In December the spotlight is on Corelli, followed by Lully, Purcell and Muffat in January then Pergolesi, Handel and Vivaldi in February, with each month a film screening at the Cinéma Mercury as well. The programme then continues with Johann Sebastian Bach and family.
